Weather permitting, we will begin work on the water system startup on May 15, 2026. As always, unforeseen weather events are possible, but if all goes as planned we are working toward having water service available for public consumption by Memorial Day weekend.

As part of the startup process, the system must go through required sampling and testing before certification can be issued. This involves taking samples, delivering them for testing, having them approved and then repeating the process before applying for final certification. Each sample drop-off requires a 46-mile drive to Mammoth Lakes, so the process does take some time and effort. Hats off to the board members and volunteers who will make that happen!

If all goes well with sampling and certification, we may receive permission to begin service water around May 21 or May 22.

Please also note that Virginia Lakes Road is currently closed. For those planning ahead, Fishmas, the traditional Eastern Sierra regular fishing season opening day, is on Saturday, April 25, 2026, which is the last Saturday in April. Check with Mono County about road closures.

The Virginia Lakes Mutual Water Corporation board meeting will occur around the startup, exact date TBD and will be posted here on the website.

Most of California is rather warm this week. The highs are pushing 70 degrees at Virginia Lakes which means the snow pack is melting faster than average, indeed snow pack is below average for this time of year. Fortunately, California reservoirs are reporting above average levels for this time of year!

Walt says, “Please note that VLR is only melted out on some sections below Heliport only. Rest of VLR is still covered in snow up to Resort. Plowing to begin in a few days.” Thanks for the photos Walt!
