Firewise Follow Up

VL Owners/Residents:

I wanted to follow up on behalf of the ad-hoc Firewise Committee after our July 4th Town Hall with Beth Burnham.

The committee decided not to pursue Firewise designation at this time out of respect for concerns expressed by property owners, but we have some recommendations and one observation: 

Recommendations:

– Structures at Virginia Lakes should be fire-hardened by the owners where feasible. (E.g. clearing pine needles from roofs/wood piles/decks and structures, clearing vegetation away from structures, & replacing fire prone materials.)

– We as a community should remove crowding vegetation along our roads so better ingress/egress can occur for residents & responders.

Observation:

– Residents have learned about being fire safe and seem to be taking actions. We think this is a success aligned with the fundamental goal behind Firewise.

For now, we will fold as a committee. If the Virginia Lakes community would like to resume the discussion or pursue Firewise designation in the future, we can re-form.
