Important CalMutuals Legislative Alert

We received CalMutuals’ update newsletter and thought we’d share some important information about legislative action that is happening that you may want to know about.

The Spring Newsletter from CalMutuals alerted mutual water companies to two bills currently moving through the California Legislature that may significantly affect how mutual water companies operate.

The bills are SB 1417 and SB 1291. SB 1417 concerns mutual water company assessments, water charges, notice requirements, and access to shareholder contact information. SB 1291 would add new website, meeting notice, document access, teleconference, and reporting requirements for mutual water companies.

CalMutuals is warning that these bills could increase costs, create new administrative burdens, affect shareholder privacy, and expose volunteer boards and small systems to additional legal and operational risk. CalMutuals’ Call to Action page asks mutual water companies and members to help make their voices heard.
